HIKING PROTOCOLS

A few simple rules to remember to make any hike a more enjoyable experience for all.

EVERYONE AT THEIR OWN PACE
We encourage everyone to hike at his or her own pace. There is a hike leader and a sweep on every hike who are in communication via walkie-talkies. Whatever your pace, there will always be someone in front and someone behind you.

LOOK BEHIND YOU
We cannot stress this enough! Although hiking is a solitary sport, we hike as a group and need to look out for each other. Whenever you take a turn on the trail, look BEHIND you to ensure that your fellow hiker has seen in which direction you've gone.

WHISTLE CODE
The whistle code is a method of communication when your fellow hikers are too far away to hear you speak. Anyone is welcome to use whistles for communication whenever appropriate.
  • ONE whistle blast = STOP! Wherever you are and wait.
  • TWO whistle blasts = STOP! And come towards whoever blew the whistle.
  • THREE whistle blasts = STOP! And come QUICKLY towards whoever blew the whistle as there may be an emergency at hand.

ROAD WALKING
Until paved roads have lanes dedicated to hikers, we must share the roads with motorists! Please walk on the side and in the opposite direction the cars are going. Everyone is to stay on the same side of the road.

LEAVE YOUR PACK ON THE TRAIL
Should you have to leave the trail at any time, remember to leave your backpack on the trail. This is a signal to your fellow hikers that you have momentarily left the group and that they should wait for you so that you are not left behind once you rejoin the trail.

NO GARBAGE
We should all make an effort to leave trails cleaner than we found them. Kindly carry out all your garbage.

PASSING OTHERS
If you would like to pass the hiker in front of you, just say "Track, please" and they will kindly step aside and let you by.

HIKING POLES
Hiking poles are a great idea and can take pressure off the knees, especially when going downhill. Just remember not to swing those poles or they could become deadly weapons! Also, when packing poles in your knapsack, pack them with the points facing downwards.
