"I really enjoyed the organizational aspect and the professionalism of both leaders. Tuscany seen by foot was much more than I could ever imagine. Beautiful, breathtaking and challenging. A dream realized."

TUSCANY
Italy is a dream that keeps returning for the rest of your life.
- Anna Akhmatova (Russian poet).
Tuscany is one of Italy's most beautiful areas, ideal for walking and hiking.
In the North, the 6500ft high mountains are covered with forests of beech and chestnut trees. We will spend one week in the village of San Marcello at the family-run HOTEL IL CACCIATORE, which overlooks a forested valley. The week's hikes will be on forest trails in the valley and along and over the mountaintops of Doganacchia and Abetone. On the non-hiking day, we'll visit the walled city of Lucca and nearby Pisa. To the south, the mountains become undulating hills covered with olive groves, sunflowers, vineyards and cypress trees interspersed with medieval towns and villages dating back to the 12th century. Our hikes in this area will take us to Poggibonsi, Certaldo and San Gimignano, noted for its "skyscrapers" dating back over 600 years. The hotel this week is LA VECCHIA CARTIERA in the old (& new) town of Colle di Val d'Elsa from which Siena and Florence are just a short bus ride away. As this is Chianti country, one day will be spent visiting some local wineries by bus to sample their wines and olive oil.
