TUSCANY, ITALY
Italy is a dream that keep returning for the rest of your life. - Anna Akhmatova (Russian poet).
Tuscany offers the quintessential Italian experience – great
food, good wines, art and architecture, and passionate locals. It
has been blessed both by nature and by man, and the area is undeniably
beautiful for walking and hiking. In the North, the 6500ft high mountains
are covered with forests of beech and chestnut trees. We spend the
first week in the village of San Marcello at the family-run ALBERGO
IL CACCIATORE, which overlooks a forested valley and serves the best
home-cooked Italian food. This week’s hikes will be on forested
trails, through picturesque hill towns and over the mountaintops of
Doganaccia and Abetone, two of Northern Tuscany’s premier ski
regions. On a non-hiking day, we’ll visit the walled city of
Lucca, as well as nearby Pisa to see the gravity-defying Leaning Tower.
To the south, the mountains become undulating hills covered with olive
groves, sunflowers, vineyards and cypress trees interspersed with
medieval towns and villages dating back to the 12th century. Our hikes
in this area will take us to Poggibonsi, Certaldo and San Gimignano,
noted for its “skyscrapers” dating back over 600 years.
The hotel this second week is LA VECCHIA CARTIERA in the old (&
new) town of Colle di Val d’Elsa from which Siena and Florence
are just a short bus ride away. As this is Chianti country, one day
will be spent visiting some local wineries to sample their wines and
olive oil.
