New Zealand
There are few places in the world which can offer so much variety within such a short distance... to anyone who enjoys the great outdoors [New Zealand] is simply paradise... www.backpack-newzealand.com
Spring in kiwi country! Enjoy a full itinerary of hiking and sightseeing throughout New Zealand beginning in Auckland on the North Island. Hike on the Coromandel Peninsula with “Kiwi Dundee” and then on to Rotorua, well known for its steaming geysers and boiling mud pools. Continue on to Tongariro National Park for the Tongariro Crossing (likely the best one-day walk in all of New Zealand), passing over volcanic terrain along the slopes of the active volcanoes. Our last night on the North Island will be spent in the capital city of Wellington before we cross the Cook Strait to begin the second half of our adventure on the South Island. We’ll have a chance to visit sunny Nelson before we begin the Abel Tasman coastal walk. Then, travelling south through the Buller Gorge to the west coast, stopping at Pancake Rocks, we arrive at Franz Josef on the edge or Westland National Park, the only area in the world where glaciers descend from snowfields into lush rainforest. Heading inland, we arrive at Queenstown, one of the country’s most popular resort towns well known for its adventure tourism. Here begins the 5-day Milford Track. Traversing the heart of New Zealand’s wild fjord country, the Milford Track has long been described as “the finest walk in the world”. After a celebratory dinner, we’ll travel on to Christchurch before returning home. We’ll be staying at SEVERAL DIFFERENT HOTELS, and transportation will be by private, chartered bus.
