AUSTRIA
More than 70% of Austria's total area is covered by mountains of all shapes and sizes, and the rugged beauty of the Alps demands exploration. Walking, hiking, or mountain climbing across these hills and glaciers is an unforgettable experience (Frommer's Austria, 2003).
Vorarlberg is Austria's westernmost state bordering on Switzerland, Germany and Liechtenstein. It encompasses the greatest scenic
variety of any region in the Eastern Alps, ranging from the peaceful waters of Lake Constance where the Bregenz festival takes
place on the world's largest floating stage to the towering peaks and glaciers of the 11,000ft high Silvretta mountains.
Vorarlberg has over 2000 km of marked hiking trails and almost 50 cable cars and chairlifts open and available all year
to take hikers up to the summits for some invigorating hikes or just a leisurely lunch in a restaurant. In the centre of Montafon,
Vorarlberg's southernmost Alpine valley, is the lively town of Schruns, which will be our base for the holiday. The Ladurner family,
who own the HOTEL ZIMBA, will welcome our group with excellent cuisine, lavish buffet breakfasts (2 of which will be served in
restaurants 4000ft above the village), BBQ's in the garden and evening entertainment. The indoor pool, whirlpool and sauna will help
soothe aching muscles. There are convenient connections from Schruns by rail to Bludenz, Bregenz, Liechtenstein, Innsbruck and even
Vienna and by ship to Lindau and Friedrichshafen.
